This intricately crafted ring features the unmistakable symbol of St. Benedict. The top of the ring is adorned with a cross, containing the letters C S S M L – N D S MD, which are initials for the Latin phrase “Crux sacra sit mihi lux! Nunquam draco sit mihi dux!” meaning “May the holy cross be my light! May the dragon never be my overlord!” The prominent letters C S P B stand for “Crux Sancti Patris Benedicti,” or “The Cross of [our] Holy Father Benedict.”
Surrounding the cross are the letters V R S N S M V – S M Q L I V B, referring to the exorcism prayer “Vade retro Satana! Nunquam suade mihi vana! Sunt mala quae libas. Ipse venena bibas!” which translates to “Begone Satan! Never tempt me with your vanities! What you offer me is evil. Drink the poison yourself!” At the top of the ring is the word “PAX,” Latin for “peace.”
